Ok, well, no thanks until I realized that it’s the only way to talk to these fellas. So I went for it. Turns out if that’s their go to, their conversation skills lack just as much as their come-on. Typical messenger conversation:

Me: Oh, hey there. How’s it going?

hotboy123: Hey, who’s this?

Me: Kirsten, from e-Harmony.

Hotboy123: Oh, Hey.

Me: So, how was your weekend?

Hotboy123: Cool, yours?

Me: Great, I’m pretty warn out from the first sunny weekend. Looking forward to a few months more of that.

Hotboy123: …

Me: Yeah, so I went golfing for the first time ever. Had a great time, but could definitely use some practice.

Hotboy123: Yeah. That sounds cool.

I’ll just stop there, I stopped trying after that. What ever happened to actually meeting in person, or maybe, I don’t know… Asking for a phone number? Conversation?

Maybe I’m asking to much of these guys. Would it be inappropriate to send them links on how to articles about how to sound interesting? Like 9 Tips to Get You From the Phone to the Date. Just sayin’.

Well this week I found myself adding to another list of conspiracies. Things made for couples. It was made painfully obvious that financially, the world wants me to be un-singled. Not only is it nearly impossible for a moderately successful single women (with a small shopping problem) to buy a house but it’s also just as impossible to afford rent in a one-bedroom dwelling in a night-walkable neighborhood.

I scoured our fair city for single bedroom apartments that weren’t completely dumpy and close enough to the city to commute by bike and not have to re-do my hair-do when I arrive.

There were plenty of options out there…

1) Metro-Retro: A teeny tiny modern flat in psuedo-walking distance to fancy little streets where I was sure I’d meet lots of single boys while getting coffee on Sunday mornings. Though the rent price meant that I’d be eating a diet consisting of rice and Sunday morning coffee. Probably would be good for my singles-meeting figure but not necessarily comfy living.

2) Suburmet: A nice sized “home” located about 1 mile past the dinner party travel distance. I’d be home, alone, alot. But it’s cheap enough to pay for gas for the long commute.

3) Neither here, nor there: I choose the middle of the road. More that I wanted to pay, but not quite the bachelorette pad I was hoping for. A place to call home as a single girl for years on end…

Here’s the rub. A nice one bedroom place would be great to split with one other person. Someone you’d have to split the bed with too. Not that I’m complaining. It would be pretty epic to live in those places with your “significant other” but for now, I’m paying for both of us.

So not much to talk about on the actual dating front. The cool chill of fall rolled in this week, and I started adding vitamin D to my daily supplements to keep the sun shining. Life is good, things are getting in order. I think I’m working on things that will lead to a dateable existence (at least that’s what I’m telling myself). In the meantime, these are the sorts of things that keep the dream alive.

This weekend I went to a rummage sale at an Eagles Lodge here in Portland. On the way in I got a rundown of all their events. One of which was a “Social Club”.

So, if you were to imagine what an F.O.E. Lodge looks like inside, you’d probably be correct. All the money went into the dance floor. But there’s a bar area with some deep fried snacks and cheap + stiff drinks. All the ingredients you need for a killer shindig. However, my preconceived notions of who would be at a “Social Club” are based on the fact that my Grandma met all three of her husbands there over the course of about 60 years. Not necessarily at this location, but you get the idea.

I could take that two ways. #1 This is a great place to meet a husband. or #2 This is a great place to meet a 70 year old husband.

Read the flyer though and you’d imagine the normal hipster fair. There are “records”, crafts, and hip coffee. Oh, and vintage fashions.

So. I’ll be there. Will you?
